In the first attempt, Chanu lifted 84 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk.

Chanu was the only Indian player in the race. Chanu Malleswari became the second Indian to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting after winning bronze in the 69 kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games. Earlier, at the World Championships, Chanu won bronze in the snatch, lifting a total of 205 kg in clean and jerk. It was this performance that earned the Chanu Olympic qualification.
